Why Is She Famous?
One of Bollywood’s most versatile starlets, Kareena Kapoor is a four-time Filmfare Award-winning actress who has starred in over 30 productions, including Refugee, Chameli, Dev and Omkara.Hailed by multiple publications as one of the hottest heroines in Bollywood, Kareena has been blessed with a fabulous curvy physique and smoldering bedroom eyes. Alas, this sensuous starlet is currently off the market, since she is dating fellow actor Shahid Kapur. “We understand each other well,” she says happily. “Shahid and I share so much together. If he reads an interesting book, he makes me read it. What's life without love? It's so lonely at the top. I'm so lucky to share my successes and failures with someone.”
It seems that nearly everyone in Bollywood has an opinion about Kareena. “When Kareena performs, I feel like whistling,” says actress Rani Mukherjee. “She is such a live wire.” Her grandfather and fellow actor, Raj Kapoor, is quick to agree. “She is a born superstar,” he gushes. Their praise is understandable when you consider the fact that Kareena has appeared in more than 30 films since making her big-screen debut in 2000.
Along the way, she has also won five Filmfare Awards and is now generally regarded as one of the finest -- and most influential -- actresses in Bollywood.
Biography
Kareena Kapoor was born September 21, 1977, in Bombay, India. A member of one of India’s legendary acting families, Kareena always knew that she’d one day end up in show business as well. “My great grandfather (Prithviraj Kapoor), my grandfather (Raj Kapoor), my parents (Randhir Kapoor and Babita) and my sister (Karisma Kapoor)... Everyone has been involved with films,” she says. “So you can say it was inevitable. Besides, even when I was a kid, I only wanted to be an actress.”

Kareena was finally given the opportunity to show off her acting chops in 2000 when she made her big screen debut in Refugee. Seven years later, she still recalls filming her very first scene. “It was a romantic scene between Abhishek (Bachchan) and me,” she says. “We were very comfortable from day one because he is part of my family and a close friend of mine. The chemistry was there right from the word go.” Kareena’s ease was also apparent to critics and fans alike and she was honored for her tremendous work with a prestigious Filmfare Best Debut Award.Although Kareena appreciated the recognition, it paled in comparison with the honor of working with legendary director J.P. Dutta. “Working with J.P. Dutta is like working with an institution,” she gushes. “I am glad I had the opportunity to learn so much about acting from him.”
Although Kareena’s next few films failed to meet expectations, producers continued to line up to offer her new roles, and she managed to bounce back in 2001 with Asoka and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, both of which earned her Filmfare Award nominations.

Kareena had another banner year in 2003, thanks to stellar performances in Chameli, for which she won a Filmfare Special Performance Award and Dev, which netted her a Filmfare Critics Award for Best Performance. The two roles showcased her remarkable versatility and vaulted her to the top of her profession.Although her next five films enjoyed only moderate success, Kareena reclaimed her reputation as Bollywood’s most promising new starlet in 2006, thanks to her stunning performance in Omkara. A gritty adaptation of Shakespeare’s masterpiece Othello, the film enthralled audiences, and Kareena was rewarded for her efforts with a Filmfare Critics Award for Best Performance. “I did one thing for Omkara that I had never done before,” she explains. “I gave all my attention to it. [It was] the first time I've done only one film at a time. I had all the time to focus on my character, make it more real than anything I've done.”
Kareena has since appeared in the films Halla Bol and Don, for which she received very favorable reviews. Look for her in a handful of big-budget Bollywood productions including Milenge Milenge, Tashan, Roadside Romeo, Lajjo, Mr. Mehta & Mrs. Singh, and Kismat Talkies.
